Since I live in New England, and the ground is still covered with snow halfway through the month of March, my kids are getting a little stir-crazy, to say the least. And so am I. We live in a relatively small space, so during the wet, cold, windy, snowy months (which is about half of them), there isn’t a lot of room for children to run around, especially as they get older and their level of energy seems to grow with them.
So, after a month of hemming and hawing, researching, and reading reviews, I finally purchased a Gym1 Indoor Playground. And it is awesome! We’ve only had it for five days, but it has been amazing, especially since it arrived the day before a big snow storm, and another storm is expected next week.
Let me tell you about our experience thus far. As I said, it arrived the day before a big snow storm that forced the cancellation of school, so right then and there I was beyond happy. When I opened the box, everything was in order. It came with the core bar unit (to be assembled), the swing, the ladder, and the rings. The instructions were fairly easy to read, as instructions go, but the company also has a helpful video, which I watched, and is sometimes easier than reading and looking at pictures.
Assembling the unit was pretty simple. I really liked that all the hardware came screwed on to the bolts they went with so that I wasn’t fishing around or opening separate plastic bags looking for the right washer or lock nut for each one. It took a total of maybe 10 – 15 minutes to put the whole bar together.
Then the fun could begin! My kids didn’t know I had ordered it, so they were very excited and surprised. Placing the unit in the doorway and securing it takes about 30 seconds, tops. Within a minute we had the rings attached and they were swinging and doing flips. We didn’t end up using the swing because there isn’t enough room at the moment, but they used the ladder and had quite a bit of fun with that.
We also have some different rings and bars from an outdoor Ninja Line that we attached to the carabiner clips (although you’re probably not supposed to do that, so shhh…). In any case, all of the accessories attach and detach very easily, and my kids are able to do it themselves, so they aren’t asking me every two minutes, which is a huge bonus in my book.
All in all, I can’t think of one negative thing about the Gym1 Indoor Playground in the short time we’ve had it. It provides hours of fun for kids on cold, snowy, and wet days. They even use it before and after school. It definitely helps burn some of that pent up energy that stores up in them at school all day. The fact that it goes together rather quickly, can be set up and taken down within seconds, and there isn’t any need to screw anything to the wall are all bonuses in my book.
Gym1 also has attachments a couple of more accessories available separately, or in their Deluxe Indoor Playground. In addition, there are accessory sets for teenagers who might be looking to exercise for sports, so it’s something that you can use for older kids, and will also grow with younger children.
If you’re feeling motivated, there are attachments for adults who are looking for an indoor gym. I would love to say that I’m one of those adults, and in theory, I am. But in actuality, I tried to do one pull up to test it out, making sure it was secure, and my arms were sore the next day. Baby steps, I guess.
After watching my kids play on this indoor playground for a week, I realized that I should be a responsible parent and probably get some sort of soft mat for them to land on. Mats can be VERY expensive, but I found this one on Amazon that doesn’t break the bank.
So if your kids are constantly looking to you to be their cruise director, I highly suggest the Gym1 Indoor Playground. It’s not exactly inexpensive, but it’s sure to occupy the kids while they’re cooped up inside, and burn some of that energy, of which they seem to have a never ending supply. And trust me – it’s worth it!
***UPDATE*** As of July 13, 2018, Amazon only has the Deluxe Indoor Playground available for purchase.
